Looks like more and more SOT's are finally showing up in the news along with
associated drowning/hypothermia factors - seems even the news agencies are
starting to differentiate between types of vessels and sub-vessels.

Too bad the sea and lakes don't differentiate - boaters need to be
prepared...

subject: [Paddlewise] Signals?

G'day,

I've been learning how to teach people to paddle and brushing up on theory.
Thought I'd check my knowledge of kayak paddle, hand and acoustic signals.

My very limited search discovered three or four possible standards for
kayakers with the most commonly used being anarchy. For example a vertical
paddle can variously mean: 'All clear', 'Follow the agreed route' or in our
club 'Come to me'; while a distress call can be three whistles (North
America), six whistles (UK), and with COLREGS a whistled SOS or a continuous
whistle. The closest I've got to finding standards are the International
River Signals, National Standard Signals and COLREGS if you are at sea.

Wondered what signals were most widely used and accepted around the world?
Particularly for distress signals.

All the best, PeterO

subject: [Paddlewise] Carbon vs Fibreglass - coatings on a paddle
Date: Mon, 5 Dec 2011 08:42:55 +1100
G'day,

I've noticed that the coating on my carbon fibre paddle degrades with
scratches and discoloration over a few years and commercial recoating hasn't
been all that satisfactory. I don't seem to get the same effect with
fibreglass paddles. I'm going to try recoating the blades myself and on
sanding back I've noticed that underneath the discoloured material there is
a 'core of carbon fibre / resin that seems much tougher. I'd be glad of any
explanations and recommendations for more robust coating materials as the
paddle in question is in all other respects perfect!

PS I'm in the middle of adjusting filters on my computer as Paddlewise has
gone missing so if you can include both addresses on any replies that would
be much appreciated.

All the best, PeterO
