G'day, Just to let you know my good friend Stuart has just finished paddling around Australia. He took his time, broke no records but met a great many interesting people, communities and far too many crocodiles; and along the way became an honorary member of the Wadeye Rangers in the Kimberleys. His last message had him finished at Broome in Western Australia where I believe he was looking for somewhere to rehydrate! Suspect that is code for a beer or two; anyway no-one here has heard from him since! If he ever writes or better still records the story it will be a marvellous account! Stuart is a born raconteur. Peter said > my good friend Stuart has just finished paddling around Australia Please pass on our congratulations to Stu - it's about bloody time an Aussie did it ;-) (I'm sorry - but we're claiming Paul as a Kiwi ...if you can claim Far Lap....). We'll have to get Stu over for a beer or two at one of our NZ Kayaking get-togethers and listen to his tales, Winkworth & Geohegan certainly have some good ones ! Sandy Robson's certainly making good progress on her Oscar Speck follow-the-footsteps trip across Europe and towards Australia. She's a brave girl and I hope the Somalians are no worse than the crocs. Craig wrote > Congratulations to Stuart. Nevertheless, Paul's book did become something of a Pilot for kayakers around Australia. But its way out of date, for example the croc population has increased significantly in the time elapsed since his trip, a problem if you want to use rivers or get freshwater up north. Stuart tends to carry out expeditions unsupported and from time to time provides the club with quite challenging survival exercises. It would be useful if he ever wrote a survival manual based on his experiences. For example his opinion of PLBs would be interesting. He didn't take A VHF or Sat Phone but did take a PLB and checked it regularly and had two fail during the trip. Regarding PLB's, I'd be keen to know if there are any expeditioners on Paddlewise who have tested their equipment and experienced similar problems. Likewise to hear of anyone who has used a PLB successfully after protracted immersion in the sea. I keep mine in an Aquapac in my PFD and haven't had the same problem but Stuart's experience is worrying. What would happen if you had to use the PLB in the sea? Not much use having one that can't survive immersion and a moderate amount of exposure for any length of time! While not as fast as Freya, I imagine he probably has a lot more stories to tell of his trip--if he gets around to it!
