It's interesting about helmets. Here in this little city almost no children wear bicycle helmets but almost all adults do wear them. I find that interesting since the State mandates use of helmets by children but not adults. Apparently the police pay no attention. Even the local BMX track... owned by the city's parks department... has a sign that says "Helmets Highly Recommended". The local Goodwill store is always well-stocked with helmets of all sorts for about $1.99; many with sime impressive dents in them. But I've been told that the fire department will just give helmets to kids. The entire helmet thing has become more interesting (to me, at least) because Sue and I spent a measly $39 each at Campmor last month to update our bike helmets. We looked for maximum ventilation for the least cost. Amazingly enough we both discovered that wearing the new helmet on a very hot day is actually more comfortable than any of the alternatives (such as nothing or a baseball cap... even a mesh one). In addition they feel lighter than a baseball cap (my usual headgear). While they are not lighter than nothing we're starting to wonder if the $150 bike helmets are. LOL Obviously the engineers have been tinkering with helmets while we weren't watching.
