As I type this Sue and I are about 20 feet from the Methow (Met-how) river that runs through Winthrop, WA snug in our 36-foot motorhome surrounded by snow. We are about 8 miles south of the cross-country ski trails Winthrop is known for but the snow has been scanty this year and even though the trails are groomed by people who are VERY serious about grooming trails, they cannot make up for warm temperatures and rain. However, we still went out on the trails this morning with our daughter and her husband and our two grandsons (4 and 5). The 5-year-old did really well and skied 2km before giving up and getting into the ski Chariot sled towed by his mom. His brother stayed in the sled that Dad was towing. We've seen some bald and golden eagles flying up and down the river (which is not iced over here... but is at its confluence with the Columbia River some 33 miles south). We are thankful for propane furnaces and electric blankets but in general we are as comfortable here as we would be at home. Happy New Year to all Paddlewisers. We are not paddling (or even pedaling) but we are outdoors and enjoying life. Hope you all are doing the same.
