The evidence on this is murky. Good arguments have been made that exercise is good for "bad" joints and that it may well be better to take enough pain medication to stay active with this being better than "resting" those joints because of the pain that they cause. It seems intuitive that pain is sending you a rational message, and to listen without "covering it up" would be best. But there are probably many situations where this is NOT the case. The message is wrong and not listening is a better strategy... But it is a hard thing to study and come up with a definitive answer so there are many opinions.
