This about training not watching TV. The objective is to control
inflammation so that it doesn't blow up into a serious problem that forces
you to stop training.

Jogging is a case in point. A couple years ago, I just had to go jogging
with my brother's high school boys. It took more than a month, perhaps two,
for the pain in my knees to go away (pills or no pills). No more canoeing
for me. My knees just can't do it. Hard enough to just clean up after the
cat makes a mess on the floor. Just can't kneel on a hard surface.

Back in my 10-K days, I thought I would never do a mile in over 8 minutes.
My best races: 10-K, 7 minutes per mile; 5-K, 6.5 minutes/mile. Now,
walking, it takes me 8 minutes to do a half mile. For cardiovascular
training, it turns out that walking is more work than jogging. Don't believe
it? Check it out with your heart monitor. Use a fixed distance and fixed
time. You will find your average heart rate is higher when you walk the
distance than it is when you jog the distance. Thus, to work on
cardiovascular fitness, walk for speed and save your knees. Time yourself
for fixed distances with heart monitor to track heart rate. My monitor
records heart data, which I can print out at home. I can do the same on my
local 5 mile paddling course (local lake). This allows me to compare the
effort for paddling with the effort for speed walking. Thus, I can separate
bird watching from training. If I take my sister paddling, it's bird
watching- no training involved.
