This Saturday (Feb. 25) Shurr Adventures and the Naples Kayak Company are sponsoring the first annual paddle through the 10,000 Islands, an event to raise money and attention for the historic 116-year-old Smallwood Store & Museum in Chokoloskee, FL. The cost for the trip, fish fry and entertainment by Florida's best folk musicians will go 100 % to the Smallwood Trust, for legal fees required to fight a developer who has blocked access to the Store and is threatening to develop tiny Chokoloskee Island with condos and push the Store into the Chokoloskee Bay. For information, call 239-695-2989. Please stand with us to protect this last frontier of Florida and this direct attack on one of Florida's most historic places. The Smallwood Store is the first place to trade with the Seminoles when they first emerged from their hiding in the 'glades after the end of the Seminole Wars. It is the place where Bloody Ed Watson was gunned down by a local vigilante squad of citizens - a tale made famous in Peter Mathiessen's National Book Award winning novel "Killing Mr Watson."
