 - This mail is in HTML. Some elements may be ommited in plain text. -

I really hope you get this fast. I could not inform anyone about our trip, because it was impromptu. we had to be in Philippines for a Tour...The program was successful, but our journey has turned sour. we misplaced our wallet and cell phone on our way back to the hotel we lodged in after we went for sight seeing. The wallet contains all the valuables we have. Now, our passport is in custody of the hotel management pending when we make payment.
I am sorry if i am inconveniencing you, but i have only very few people to turn to now. i will be indeed very grateful if i can get a short term loan from you ($2,650). this will enable me sort our hotel bills and get my sorry self back home. I will really appreciate whatever you can afford in assisting me with. I promise to refund it in full as soon as I return. let me know if you can be of any assistance. Please, let me know soonest.
Thanks so much
Barb

So is this the Tomita Scam Paddlewise Graybeard Catchup Encounter Group?

I'm in.  Cool and showery here, recovering from a bout of dental dreariness, but enjoying Becky's account of her FIRST visit to Yosemite ... probably one of the few sexagenarians in the US who can make that claim.

Also enjoying the convoluted track three guys in their early sixties are making through the Broughtons, as part of a long planned Inside Passage jaunt.  Their site here.  Really should check out the comments each night.

Hope you find that passport, Barbarascammersan.

I told Barb, that's what she gets for using AOL! She says a large group
of AOLers got hacked and now she can't receive any mail!
I was thinking that gee, I just had coffee with her a couple days ago
and she didn't mention a trip to the Philippines!

Thanks for sharing that link, I'll have to keep tabs on them.

I received a similar e-mail once, stating that an informal acquantaince had
been mugged while
on vacation in London, with the mugger getting all the money, id, passport,
etc., and now the hotel
was holding my friend for ransom. The main problem was that my friend
wasn't even in England,
but more like Southern California. It was a fairly convincing story, and
might have had a fair chance
of working, except that I'm so cheap.

I have a friend, an eighty five year old native minister, who got
scammed by "the mugged in London story". It involved a mutual friend who
is one of the kindest ladies you would ever meet. sadly my friend was
scammed for a couple thousand dollars. I think his next sermon was
titled "Getting your due on Judgment Day!"

stay wise

Point of order: AOL is not the worst freemail provider out there,
although it *has* degradedly markedly since they laid off their
entire senior postmaster team a few years ago. That "honor" belongs
jointly to Yahoo and Hotmail, who I award an "F" grade simply because
no lower one is available. Gmail is marginally better but seems
insistent on making "improvements" that are not any such thing but
actually thinly-veiled attempts to pry loose more user data.

If you're serious about email, do NOT use a freemail provider. Either
set up your own domain and mailserver, or if you don't have the technical
skills for that, use a paid service run by competent people. I think
highly of Panix, Sonic, Hushmail, and Fastmail. (Disclosure: I'm a
Panix customer, albeit for hosting, not email.)

None of that insulates you from scams like the above, of course:
if you have a weak password or if your desktop/laptop/tablet/phone
is compromised, then you're screwed no matter who hosts your email.
But it does insulate you from the persistent, systemic incompetence
of freemail providers *and* it offers marginal privacy improvement.

That is the most well-written and lucid scam-mail I've ever seen. Generally
they are couched in weird English with give-away phraseology. Something
like "get my sorry self back" is colloquially correct. "Although some might
use "ass" in place of "self". Scary stuff!

Glad her "sorry self" is not in the Phil. being held ransome by a hotel
proprietor. BTW: if this does happen to you, the U.S. Consul General (at
the Embassy) will help.
