Mark got it right:
A line from the bow to the front bumper is a very good way of keeping things safe,
as lift, at subsonic speeds, is centred at about 25% from the leading edge, in this case
bow being the leading edge.
So the front support gets all the lifting, thus needs to be very securely attached to the roof,
if the boat is strapped to the support!
The line used should have as little stretch as possible, by the way! A used cimber's rope is
excellent, too!
Transporting the Klepper on the roof I also used lines from the sides of the forward support,
to the bow, to prevent the kayak from gliding forward in case of an emergency braking/collision.
That way the kayak didn't have to be strapped in so heavily, as when just secured to the
front, and rear, supports! I used a line from the stern to the car's hitch, too, but that probably
didn't do much good!

I carry kayaks and surfski on my '07 Ford Focus on Yakima Landing Pads
screwed into my roof. I've always figured it was not the weight, but the
upward push of the wind that is the main concern. So I do use a bow tie
down with a loop around the bow of my ski with a bit of bungee cord to
keep it from moving around. I figure it counter acts some of the upward
wind force.
Occasionally I'll skip the bow tie down and drive to the beach hoping my
roof doesn't start peeling off from the car!
