OK – Paddlewisers – now we’re all revved up – please put on your thinking caps for me ;-)

Suggestions & advice sought for this July & August:

After paddling in the Kenai (Resurrection Bay & Aialik Bay), we’re heading off on a road trip – looking for paddling (and hiking) opportunities along the way…

Route is Seward – Anchorage – Tok – Dawson – Inuvik – Whitehorse – Whistler – Vancouver where Natasha gets back on a plane (to keep her employer happy).

Fingers crossed, we will try to be prepared for perils. We will have a reliable 4x4, with 2 spare rims/tyres, extra Diesel & water, food & fuel. I grew up (a long time ago) on snow & gravel roads in Quebec and Natasha has experience of them from Southern Africa. We learnt some bear wisdom for our solo coastal trip in 2010 – which helps us keep a ‘hygienic’ campsite.

Along that route, aside from the thousands of scenic miles and trail opportunities (plus the various POI that the Milepost guide-book has to suggest), we have plans to go for a nostalgic paddle on Sam McGee’s Lac Laberge (near Whitehorse) and the Yukon River (same) and a strong desire to get onto the McKenzie delta waters.

Well, I have that strong desire and Natasha brings to the table her dread of Polar Bears… so we’ll see.
We’ll have the K2 & paddling gear in the truck – but only days (not weeks) for any one point – so paddling down the McKenzie from Hay River to Inuvik is (unfortunately) out of the question.

Anyone ever been up that way – to Inuvik – or made it out to Tuktoyaktuk ?
I have this infantile wish to paddle on the Arctic Ocean…

Anyone got a ‘must paddle’ memory of a lake or stretch of river (Feathercraft-able, please ;-) along that route ?
Especially down the northern interior of BC ?

Best Regards

Paul Hayward, Auckland, New Zealand

… we are back on the M/V Columbia in July – heading up to the Kenai with the K2, for another dose of what makes Alaska great. …
