Following up on the outrigger idea for little kids....

In "Amphibious Man" (which you can get from John Heath, email privately
if you need info because I don't have it handy to put here) there is
one brief shot of little kids in small greenland kayaks with
outriggers.  The outrigger was like bicycle training wheels, it stuck
out on both sides, with little floation things at the ends.  That way
you have stability on both sides.  I'm going from memory but I think
the outrigger floats were out of the water, so you still had a feel for 
the water, but if you leaned too far a float would come into contact and
stabilize you.  I am not sure how they were attached, but my mental
picture is of a plank across the rear with the floats on the end.
