Join us for the 2nd Annual San Juan Challenge, May 1-3, 1998 at South
 Harbor Park in Anacortes, Washington!

The Challenge features a 2-day, 40-mile kayak race from South Harbor Park
to beautiful Rosario Resort on Orcas Island, with a return trip the second
day by a different route. This outstanding route through the San Juan
Islands features both populated and wild shores, as well as crossings of
Rosario Strait, Bellingham Channel, Guemes Channel, and Obstruction Pass.
Cash and equipment prizes are provided. The 1997 Challenge was won by
Olympic gold medalist Greg Barton in a total time of 5 hours and 11
 minutes.

At South Harbor Park, we have a great weekend planned for the recreational
or novice kayaker. Festivities include lectures and demonstrations, a
product show, a used kayak and equipment "kayauction," a rolling contest,
 and other celebrations.

There will be a one day "Mini Challenge" Race on May 2, starting with the
San Juan Challenge, but circumnavigating Guemes Island back to South
Harbor
Park, a distance of 16.5 miles.

Less competitive paddlers can enter the "Predicted Log" Division in either
race. Predicted Log prizes are based on how close you come to your
 predicted time.

Conditions for the Challenge can vary considerably, but there can be
strong
rips even on calm days. Last year's Race had winds on the second day of
up
to 52 mph, which produced seas of up to 8 feet in tide rips. Paddlers
must
have practiced self-rescue in difficult conditions. Safety boats have
included private volunteers and local Dive Rescue Units. The Mini
Challenge features a shorter, more protected course, but the Guemes
Channel
crossings can still be very challenging at times.

For more information, see our Website at www.sjcraceandexpo.org.

Whether you're a beginning kayaker or an accomplished racer, we hope to
see
 you in Anacortes, May 1-3!
