Can a foot operated pump be conveniently mounted and operated when a rudder
is also installed?

Henderson makes a fine foot operated diaphragm pump. Oddly enough it is not
often found at kayak stores (at least here in Ontario). You might try the
marine hardware stores in your area.

The US distributor used to be is Imtra Corporation 30 Samuel Barnett Blvd,
New Bedford Industrial Park, New Bedford, MA 02746. If they still are they
can help you. If they can't let me now and I will find out who sells them.

henderson "chimp" pump comes as a foot operated version with an internal
return spring. you push to pump water out, spring rebounds to suck water in.
mounts on your foward bulkhead. reasonably effective, pumping out a fully
swamped boat is a lot of work. but you can do it while paddling along. never
had to use it for such other than rescue practice, but it is really nice to
be able to pump out the water that always leaks past skirt and accumulates
when rolling or surfing.

i did modify a hand bilge pump from west marine once to do similiar. end
result was cheaper but not as effective, and much bulkier. was difficult to
find a non corroding spring to put inside.

Since you are asking the question, it means you want something that will
leave you hands free to brace, paddle on etc. while you get water out of
your boat.

Have you considered a battery-operated bilge pump? They weigh a few
pounds and will pump out water at a _faster_ rate than most of us can
ever do on a _sustained_ basis with a hand or foot pump. They are
submersible and are amazingly reliable. I'm basing this on the accounts
of several people who I have talked to who have them and also seeing
their demonstrating how well they work. They will easily pump for an
hour or two.

Price is in the $35 range.

They of course can break down, batteries go dead, etc. But you can also
easily develop a cramp in your leg or arm when pumping with muscle
driven pumps. Just a caution: One person I know who brings one with
him at all times, has it stored in a bailing bucket. Smart man. Have a
backup :-)

we've got a member of the RMCC who has an electric bilge pump on his
canoe!! solar powered!! and man, does it move water. incredible. great for
his playboat, but the pump & housing, etc, take up quite a bit of room,
the way his is rigged...

Fortune:
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (The Times of London)

Dear Sir,

I am firmly opposed to the spread of microchips either to the home or
to the office. We have more than enough of them foisted upon us in
public places. They are a disgusting Americanism, and can only result
in the farmers being forced to grow smaller potatoes, which in turn
will cause massive unemployment in the already severely depressed
agricultural industry.

Yours faithfully,
	Capt. Quinton D'Arcy, J. P.
