Bill, I would guess that would depend on where you are and what time of
year it were! If you are doing a solo trip down the Yukon river it would
be differant than on the local lake in the middle of May.
I do most of my kayaking solo and about half is in the fall>spring
months. If something goes wrong with my trip I know it will be 24 hours
after I was supposed to get back before my wife would sound the alarm.
Therefore, I carry on the local inland lakes and rivers what "I" need to
keep me comfortable to wait out that time if nessarry.
I have a old Sterns vest with four pockets and in them I have:
A butane lighter, water proof matches, small candle stub, magnesiam fire
starter(as you can see, I want a fire because I KNOW I'll likely be
spending the night)..whistle, signal mirrow, knife,"AA" mag light,
plastic garbage bag(rain jacket, etc), rescue blanket, excredrin(I'll
have a head ache for sure(G)), and a snicker bar.
This might not be enough for others in coastal regions, but it is all I
choose to have on me here.(If I have time and can, I'll grab a 6 pack of
"cool" ones from the "wreckage" for the wait!) :>)

James
