If you want to get serious about competitive training, get a heart
rate monitor and a good book on endurance conditioning. The best book I've
seen is "SERIOUS Training for Endurance Athletes" (SERIOUS is an acronym.)
by Olympic Biathlon/Nordic ski coach Rob Sleamaker and Ironman Triathlete
Ray Browining.

I've been using this method for about two months (after a 6-8 month
"base') and have raised my anaerobic threshold from 79% max heart rate to
85% max heart rate (135 to 145 beats per minute). What this means is that I
can paddle (or run, ski, hike) at a 6% faster pulse rate without going
anaerobic and running out of breath. Also with a heart rate monitor, I'm
able to adjust my pace to a level I can sustain for hours. . . while those
trying to play "catch-up" in a burst of speed run out of breath.

Unless you're seriously racing boats and working on form,
conditioning of your aerobic capacity is the best way to improve your
paddling efficiency.

Decent heart rate monitors run about $100 these days. The book is
available online: www.humankinetics.com
