Given the difference between racing and the kayaking most of us do,
I doubt it.
After all, I have yet to see anyone driving a Formula 1 car or Indy car
on city streets to commute to and from work.

Racing does produce lots of interesting stuff, but we muct be carefull
to not assume that just because something is good in racing, it is
good for everyone.

The goal of racing is to win the race.
Kayak camping/cruising is almost by definition, steping out of the 'race'
alltogether.

Thank you Michael. My first car was a 1931 Essex. My pride and joy but a
terrible thing to drive.Now I have a 1992 Ford Laser a 1.5 liter job
with wishbone suspension copied from some racing cars ??? My point was
that progress has made life easier and safer.Andy Knapp summed it up so
much better. But I have enjoyed and learned a few things from this
thread. Wonderful participation thanks all of you.
Kia Ora Eddie.
P.S. That 1931 Essex is of more value now than my 1992 Ford which drives
so much better....

I flatwater sprint in a 27# carbon-kevlar-lead boat that swamps when capsized,
powered by a carbon fiber, cranked, microweight wing that won't brace, will
dislocate your shoulder if you miss your catch by 1 cm, and goes real fast for
exactly 1 km.

I sea kayak in an old plastic Sealution using a home-made Greenland style wood
paddle that leaves my back in better shape after 20 miles of open sea paddling
than when I started, and I could probably paddle 12 hours a day indefinitely.
It sculls, it braces, it rolls, every type of stroke is soft and easy.
