My Garmin 12 XL is waterproof.....or so to the extent they claim. My first
time out, I put it on the deck and paddled the whole weekend with plenty of
salt water deck wash.

What I did notice though afterward is that there was water in the battery
compartment and that the little data or external power port (can't remember
which) on the back had started to corrode. No visible sign of water inside.

Rather than wait to see if the battery terminals started corroding, I sent
the unit back to REI for exchange and bought a Aqua Pak from West Marine for
the new one.

The Aqua Pak alone saved the unit three weekends ago when we were practicing
rolling in rough water and I forgot to put the cover back on my day hatch
when I stowed my sunglasses. The GPS came out and my wife spotted it
floating by.
