Well. . . I copy the paddlewise address, click the "reply" button,
add the paddlewise address and delete the sender/poster address. Sometimes I
polish up the subject line. Then I cobble together a text from what's been
posted and how I want to respond to it. Of late, I'm discovering that the
"select all" and "delete" button work well. . .

Of course "new message" might work better. . . I may go down in
flames on this one, but I think "bandwidth" is not so much an issue online
as it is in something like broadcasting. I have a hard time believing that
paring a few lines from my post is going to make much of an impact when
compared to SPAM and the extensive network documentation stuff that flies
about. I suppose I feel like a kayaker in the harbor (harbour) worrying
about wake when there's jetskis, tugs, freighters, and powerboats zipping
past me.

        Geo.

Some mailers offer besides "Reply" also a "ReplyAll" option. In the case
of a list like Paddlewise where the default reply-to is to the individual
sender, choosing "ReplyAll" will send the reply to the sender and a copy to the
list.

[snip]

For me, the paring increases my likelihood of reading somebody's reply
on PW.

If someone went to the trouble to edit and craft their response to
address the sense of the original message, I feel like they have made an
effort to be part of the dialog. My pet peeve is people who have a two
word, usually flippant reply, and paste in several repeated messages.

Sure, it takes another 10 - 20 seconds to do, but I think that's the
idea behind one of these lists. I suspect people "listen" to a posting
better if it seems the poster made an effort to get his/her point
across. So I like it when people do what George describes in the top
paragraph.

I agree with both George and Dave: "snipping" appropriately can
increase the effectiveness of the post dramatically.

The way I do this is to simply [WIN 95] [shift+end] [pgdn] [pgdn]
etc... which highlights the offending text then, [del]. I usually do that
until the the screen "stops moving" which takes care of the tag-lines etc...

FWIW, ANOTHER thing that gets my attention is when someone sends dupe
messages, my messages from lists are filtered and so should one "reply to
all" and I'm in that "all" of course I'll see two the same-that gets my
attention in a positive manner no-less. Offending messages on my machine
are either automatically deleted by filters, or I take care of them myself,
only takes a second.

I wonder how many [Paddlewise] communications happen off-list v/s
onlist? Frankly most of my messages re: stuff on this list, are
appropriate for anyone to read and so I most generally default to [reply to
all] function then follow it up with a snip. To me frankly it's a hassle.
OTOH, I'm willing to accept the list as it is until I'm asked :)
