Anybody know anything about builders/designers of the dories used as
guideboats on whitewater trips? To me, they look a lot like a large
sea-going dory used by fishermen in New England, and I'm sure they're
     related. Ideas? Sources?

     Thanks!

     Joq

Greetings, Jack --
for a source of plans, try Building Classic Small Craft,Complete Plans
and Instructions for 47 Boats - Commemorative Edition by John Gardner.
Pretty cool compilation of Mr Gardner's research into many different
small boat types, including dories and semi-dories, skiffs, and more.
All the boats are measured from existing examples and presented with
building plans and finsihing tips. 560 pages, about $50 but undoubtably
cheaper if you you can find it at Amazon.com or some other discounter.

Re: the type of craft -- I think your description fits what we call out
here a "McKenzie river boat," after the river in Oregon of the same
name, I believe. Used extensively by steelhead fishers, both
individuals and guides, for drifting steelhead rivers/streams. Guided
by oars.

A guy I remember from boatbuilding days, Don Hill, has a great website:
http://www.databoat.com/boatplans/DonHill/DonHill.htmlHe's the person
responsible for most of the modern development of the type and really helpful
on top of it all. Haven't
seen him in donkey's years, but he's still kickin'.

Roger
