As a portly fellow, but avid paddler I feel that to enjoy cold water
paddling safely.. one should have a good 1/4" wet-suit..
Where oh where can one find tailor made wet-suits..

Yes we paddle in cold weather (hugging smooth water shores with lotsa
flotation and never alone...)

Thanks
Robin

I seem to remember an article by the Tsnami Rangers several years
back in Sea Kayaker where they mentioned surf shops as being a great
source of customized suits. They took it one step farther as I recall, by
having paddle-jacket sleeves attatched to 1/4" farmer johns to maximize
wearability.

'Nother approach is to customize it yourself (or, let Penny, whose web
site tells you how to do it, tackle the job): Sew Your Own Gear:

Check out Northwest --- <www.nwoc.com>. Don't know that they make "custom"
suits, but they have some pretty generous wetsuits. See, especially, the
"Grizzly"! Might work, and would save a lot of money over a custom job.

Ever think about a drysuit, instead?

I recently got a custom made suit for freediving from Blue Water Hunter/
Deep Thought. It was 3/16" (5mm), hooded jacket and pants in fashionable
kelp camoflague. The suit is a bit hard to get into, as it has the slick
neoprene side in the inside. Once in it, though, it is extremely warm and
comfortable. I use diluted hair conditioner in a spray bottle to assist in
the process.

They do custom orders via www, mail or fax. Be sure to investigate knife
pockets, speargun cocking pads, and knee pads, if appropriate. Start
looking for an attractive, friendly person to do the measuring! And warm up
the tape measure, too. Brrr!

(I'm not affiliated in any way with Blue Water Hunter- just like their
quality and craftsmanship)

Another thought on easy entry for wetsuits is to wear a thin Lycra suit as
underwear. These are the type of suits divers use in warm water locales, are
skin-tight, ankle to wrist, one-piece zip-ups. They are neutrally buoyant and
provide no insulation but are slippery enough to make donning a wetsuit (even a
wet wetsuit) much easier. And no hair product emissions will escape into the
water to warn the fish!

Not sure what part of the country you're in. If you're near Santa Cruz, CA you
should visit Dion at Heat Wave Custom Wetsuits. He did a real good job for us.
