A good alternative to nose clips is to hum softly. This may sound wierd,
but it really works, since humming forces air through your nose. 

To keep from running out of "hum", take a deep breath before going
under, hum *softly*, and only hum during those times when you going
through your "gyrations". I find that "Mine eyes have seen the glory..."
is a particularly effective tune.  If you are not musically inclined, or
if you find that you are distracted by humming a tune, then you can hum
in a monotone. It still works--just not as well.  :-)
