Is it better to re-enter with the boat upside down, requiring an underwater
somersault; or can it be done with the boat sort of on its side, with the
roller never having to hang down vertically?

I find the rolling part easy. It is the re-entering that is giving me
trouble.

I spent 30 minutes this afternoon tryng a re-enter (from the side)
and roll with no success.

Bob and Jerry;
I don't know if these ideas will help you with your re-enter and roll or
not, but they are things I specifically addressed myself back when I
taught myself to re-enter and roll.
Thigh and hip bracing are more critical when you are doing a roll with a
boat full of water. The boat moves slower and you can actually torque
yourself right out of the boat (or at least out of position) during the
roll.
A big part of making the roll work is knowing what to do with your
paddle. I have often seen people wrestle with their paddle while also
trying to get into their boat only to have one get in the way of the
other and, eventually, cutting down on set-up time, they rush and miss
the roll. If you are not already doing it, hold the paddle and the boat
with the same hand, ie. if you are getting in from the right side, hold
the paddle in your left hand and also hold onto the left side of the
cockpit with the same hand. This will enable you to securely hold the
paddle out of the way while also holding the boat in the proper position
(for side entry) and the paddle will, in turn, be in the perfect
position for set-up once you are securely in the boat. Because this
position is so easy and repeatable it will flow very smoothly into your
set-up and roll.
Doing what I mentioned above, you should still have plenty of time to be
able to relax, make certain you are fully seated and secured and then
still be able to pay attention to proper set-up and the rest of the
details of the roll to make it go smoothly.
I hope this is of some help.

The problem I had with the re-entry was that the boat would not
cooperate and lay on it's side. I had enough water in my sinus by
that time not to want to try an inverted entry, but I have seen
pictures of folks crawling in the boat while it was on it's side.

Bob;

I have never re-entered and rolled a boat (keep in mind I'm a big guy)
that would lay on its side. Invariably, I can get a little ways into it
but there comes a time when I have to hold my breath, go under and
shimmy into place then roll. That's why, as I mentioned earlier, it
helps to have all of the other partuculars worked out.
