Many thanks to all those who responded to my request about pogies.
Probably the best solution for us is to use pogies with light
waterproof gloves. We have heard there is an Avon product called "Skin
So Soft" that doubles as an insect repelant. Is this really true? If
so, where can we get it?

By the way, Megan tried out the Sea Seat recently and had no problem
getting herself into it. She could even kick her feet and use her hands
as paddles to make pretty good headway. We are glad to have them in our
arsenal of safety devices.

Thanks,

Keith Kaste

Keith,
You need to find a Avon salesperson to get some SSS. I found that it did not
work all that great and it makes you smell kinda *fruity*. We used it for
sand fleas and chiggers in Costa Rica and El Salvador with marginal results.
It does work so so <skin *so so*ft> for mosquitos. I still go for the
Military dose of DEET when it really matters!

I'd second Steve's comments. The stuff got big play when the military issued
it as a bug repellent a while back, and a lot of military surplus stores
carried it --- and some still do. Some of them still have a <lot> of it,
though, because the results aren't that impressive. It did zip-point-nothing
to the attack bugs in Alaska last summer! Go DEET --- but be careful with its
reactions with synthetics!

Avon also now makes a combination bug repellant/sunscreen related to it.
No word on its aromatic properties. ;-)

And I just saw an article -- in Canoe & Kayak, I think -- about some
nifty DEET wrist/ankle-bands that release it slowly over a 4-5 day
period, alleviating the need to coat yourself in the stuff.

I have heard the same thing over the years. There are some people that
swear by it, but I found it completely useless against mosquitoes, black
flies and no-see-ums. (It is available from your "Avon Lady"). Use
DEET as your bug repellent unless you absolutely cannot use it for some
reason.

no, it leaves your skin soft, and does repel some bugs, but very few,
and leaves you greasy ... ;-( bummer. DEET eats your plastic framed
glasses [well, mine too!!]
