Am considering adding one to the collection --- or trading in the old, unused Sea Lion --- and am particularly interested in Ocean Kayak's "Scrambler XT". Anything I should compare to evaluate the "XT"? Thoughts appreciated. I use a racing surfski, a sit on top. 19.5 feet long. Learning curve starts out slow, but you can get so that nearly any bad weather can be fun, and your friends with touring boats will never be able to keep up with you if you race them. And the most important reason, for the surfski, to me, was that I can easily get off, and then back in, making freediving on it around 2 miles out, very feasible. I'm in Barbados in the Caribbean and I have several sit-on-tops. My 'thing' is rough water paddling. The best I've paddled in rough water is the Pyranha Surf-Jet 305. It has a retractable skeg and surfs waves quite good. The Prijon Twister is a good surfing sit-on-top. The others I paddled: Wilderness Systens Two-Can, Ride & Riot are OK but not for surfing. The Necky Spike and Dorado if fitted with a rudder surfs reasonably well and are comfy and stable for short touring. Of course no long boat, (sit-on-top or decked) because of the physics, can be a high-performance surfing boat. I've little experience with the Ocean Kayaks, there are only a few of them around here. If you get a boat over 12' long its not going to surf waves very well but it would probably track and hold a straight course better than a (say) 9' boat, which will not be as comfortable but will be able to surf waves. They have amazingly fast hull speeds, far faster than the relatively scow like, 12 foot long boats. The basic difference in desired use, is that I would be inclined to surf ocean waves over a mile out, and to surf in as I return to shore. The surf-yaks are short and maneuverable for surfing at the beach---which will make them far easier to control than a surfski, but would stink 2 miles out.
