Donna,
        I had trouble with my knees when running a while ago and found that
building up the muscles around the knees helped considerably.  The soup can
idea is a good one that will work your quadriceps, the large four-part
extensor muscle at the front of the thigh, and thus reduce stress on the
knee.  I would recommend building up to something more than just soup
cans... or maybe soup cans filled with cement.  Actually, IMHO, building
muscle around all of your joints is a good idea.  The less stress you put on
joints, the better.
