Is there any reason you couldn't use the air bags sold as compensators
for pool covers? They are huge (e.g., 3' x 6') and cost peanuts ($5).

sea kayaks ... right??

That is exactly what I have. I had to cut the inflation tube and
patch it with a longer piece, otherwise it would not reach the cockpit.

It is functional, but not very pretty because it is much wider than
the kayak, which causes it to fold into strange shapes as I inflate it.
Another drawback is that the canoe floats are awfully heavy. When
I put them in my skin kayak it gets to be as heavy as any fiberglass boat.

If the folks that make airbags for canoes bothered to put longer tubes
and call it kayak floats then they would be in business. May be it is just
nature's way of telling me that I must learn how to weld plastic.

Might for large volume boats, but there are several companies that make long,
tapered dry bags that will serve the purpose of flotation and/or carry dry
clothing, tents, etc., and still fit smaller boats like a Pintail. One
company I came across recently is Lochsa Connection --- think I referrenced
them a while back on a dry bag thread. E-mail is <lochsa_at_camasnet.com> and
web is <www.gorp.com/lochsa>. Good stuff, from the look of it. I have a
couple of SeaLine bags that I bought two years ago that work well, too. Using
larger bags might be difficult in that there will be a lot of friction in
sliding them in, and the ends may not have the flotation you'd like. And it's
nice to have multi-purpose equipment.

You should also try the Kodiak Sacs by Cascade Designs. The Taper 35 fits
the stern & the Taper 20 fits the bow. There's a purge valve at the tip if
you want to squeeze out the excess air.
