Have you always wondered what those folks bobbing and spinning at the
bottom of Great Falls were really up to?

Ever had a hankering to leave the creeks and marshes of the Bay and seek
greater thrills?

Thought you'd like to improve your skill in rough water?

We have just the thing for you! CPA is organizing a beginners whitewater
training clinic, to be held on July 19. No experience needed! (Yes, it
has been postponed from June 27 - thanks to an email problem which kept
this info out of the newsletter.)

The clinic will be run by Outdoor Excursions, an experienced whitewater
outfitter recommended by many of you. It will be a one-day (6-hour)
class, conducted on the Potomac near Old Angler's Inn, about 13 miles
upstream from Washington on the Maryland side. Outdoor Excursions
provides all paddling gear (boats, sprayskirts, paddles, helmets, and
presumably PFDs, though you may prefer to bring your own). You provide
clothes and shoes to paddle in, towel, sunscreen, lunch, water, and
probably your sense of humor! The cost is $64, which includes a 20% CPA
discount.

Some details about Outdoor Excursions: All of their instructors are
American Canoe Association certified whitewater trainers. There will be
at least one instructor for every five students in the class. They are
legally permitted to teach whitewater kayaking on the Potomac, and they
are insured against injury. However, we will also sign CPA waivers
before taking the class, as we have with other such clinics. For more
information about Outdoor Excursions, check their web site,
www.outdoorexcursions.com.

CPA members who are already skilled whitewater paddlers are welcome to
attend as paid participants; their skills may be useful in keeping an eye
on the novices. However, because Outdoor Excursions hires certified
instructors, they can't replace them with experienced CPA members to
lower the cost. Sorry folks!

If you are interested, please contact Joy Hecht, 703-979-0759 or
jhecht_at_capaccess.org. I'd appreciate hearing from you as soon as
possible; July 12 is the deadline to decide so that Outdoor Excursions
can reserve the kayaks for us. I hope you'll join us!

Good luck with your training.

It would help all of us (on paddlewise) to sort though our e-mail if you
could put the location in your Subject: line.
I.E. Potomac whitewater clinic - rescheduled!

This is ment to be helpful and not a slam.

Shucks, here I was thinking "cool! someone from paddlewise whom I don't
know wants to do white water - it won't be just the Chesapeake Paddlers
Association people!"

Hey, look at this way, I did put in the message which part of the country
it's in. Sometimes people send out boat ads and were're left to deduce
their location from their area code! If you don't know the code you're
not close enough?. So I get 50%, right? :-)
