In a search of the net, I found 6 web pages that illustrate and discuss
various rolling techniques. They are well done.

I found these 6 pages at two different locations with minor differences
(e.g., changed background color, links between pages differ or are missing)
and in both cases there was no information on who created these pages.

My guess is that these will be familiar to some of you. Perhaps someone
can tell me where they originated from. I have put copies of them here on
one of my machines. Please have a look. I will remove them tomorrow, not
wanting to violate someone's copyright (if they are copyrighted).

The first page is at:

    http://www.zooid.com/sbpaddle/rolling/rolling1.htm

I have placed links to the other pages at the bottom of each page.

I posted this question to GASP, got one response from a really nice person
with suggestions for trips but no mangroves, and one recommendation to send
it to PW, so here 'tis.

I'm planning my "non-family" or solo vacation for the summer, and have been
searching guidebooks and maps, trying to find the nearest coastal mangrove
swamp. From here in Americus, GA, I can get to the Gulf--Alligator Point
s. of Tallahassee--in about three and a half or four hours. I want to find
a location for several day or an overnight paddle that includes a chance to
find some mangrove habitat.

I've found out that Cedar Key has no any mangrove swamp, so what's the
closest? I hope I don't have to go as far south as Tampa, but I
will...might wait til September, though.

Thanks in advance,

Wynne
Americus, GA
USA

I usually take this vacation solo or with one or two other people. We've
been going to the Carolina coast or blackwater rivers for several years,
now I'm trying to get them to come south to the Gulf coast.

The source is obviously British. It might be from the British Canoe
Union Handbook, but I would have to check my copy to be sure.

An interesting thing about the illustrations is that several appear to
show the paddle behind the paddler's head at some point during the
roll. I would think that this technique would expose the paddler to
greater risk of shoulder dislocation. I am mostly self-taught, but when
I do a screw roll, I lay back at the finish, so my paddle is never
behind or directly above my head. (At least, that is the way it feels
to me.)

On page 4 under "The Body Follow Through", it talks about the forward vs.
backward body position on completion of the roll. I was taught to lay
back, but what is said here about leaning forward at the last makes some
sense - I have never tried that.

Somewhere in the text it mentions that the drawing differs slightly from
the desired method. The paddle behind the head may just be the artist's
rendition.

Nice job, and we appreciate the effort. But why not just post the URL of
the original page? That seems the purpose of hypertext links in this medium.

Just for the record. ALL print material is copyrighted under US and
Canadian law --even your laundry list. This is automatic, no need to
declare it anywhere. Copy may be expressly permitted, or simply not an
issue. But the material is always copyrighted.

Quite right, although links come and go; so it is often prudent to grab a
copy if you think you might wish to refer to the material later.

These pages showed up individually in a Hotbot search and were
disconnected, making them difficult to navigate between the pages. I
merely rounded them up and linked them - no real effort.

I have subsequently found another site that has them all linked nicely. See:

    http://www.algonet.se/~fedukatv/kayak.html

Again no author information.

Agreed, except when put in the public domain.

My interest here is in finding the source of this material, if possible.
Some time ago I found a similar, perhaps identical (I am not sure) set of
pages at http://www.stewart.edu/KayakRolling/Rolling.html. This server
subsequently went away before I had a chance to study it. As links come
and go, I have grabbed this set for my own perusal.

I have removed them now, leaving only a link to the Swedish site.
Hopefully someone will recognize this work and lead me to the source.

Oh well, back to work :-)

The author of the kayak rolling web pages was indeed Rob Hignell. He sent
me an email and pointed out the current location of his work. It can be
seen at:

    http://www.bristol.digitalcity.org/org/sports/canoe/kayakrol/rolling.htm

He has enhanced it with some animated images of the screw roll and the hand
roll.

Rob Hignell said, "I wrote the pages originally in 1987 for the British
Canoe Union's Canoeing Handbook. In 1993 I converted them to html and
posted them at www.stewart.edu (now defunct). On my return to England in
1996 I reworked them and put them on the current site in April last year. "

These pages are great! The animated illustrations really clarify some of
the movement:

But I confess that mostly I want to see if my email program turns this URL
into an active link.

OK. . . I've tried to print out the pages at

http://www.algonet.se/~fedukatv/kayak.html

no image. I'm able to save to disk and can print the copy text, but no pix
(which are worth thousands of words). The site is bookmarked and seems like
it might be online for a while. But I'd like to be able to see a hard copy
of the whole page.

The "page source" shows numerous gif's and evidently the print is laid
over wallpaper (which is printing out as a blank). Pretty difficult to
paste all this together into something that prints out as a hard copy.

I thought we were going to leave the first pages online for a day or so. I
calculate they were up for about eight hours. It's beginning to look like
the most difficult part of learning to roll is finding printed material on
the subject.

Upside down and holding our breath, Geo./Svenn
