The second issue of Ocean Paddler is out, and much improved
over the first issue. Among other items, Steve Lutsch has a
report on the Great Lakes Sea Kayak Symposium, where a
meeting of the Nordkapp Trust is scheduled. (In the photo of the
try-out beach, I am the one whose white Tilley hat is intercepted
by the edge of the roof of the shed, with Linda beside me holding
her Greenland paddle.) There also is an article about GPS and
GPS units that doesn't describe sea kayaking applications in
any detail, and several trip reports. And Frank Goodman
describes why a kayak turns into the wind when it is moving, but
not when it is merely drifting, with diagrams that make it easy to
understand.

Some GPS uses that should have been covered in Ocean
Paddler:

* Finding one's average speed.
* The use of routes.
* Using the GPS as a notepad for your log. (If you are otherwise
too busy to keep track of arrival and departure times when island-
hopping and taking breaks, pressing the Mark key will record the
time of the entry along with the position.)
* Finding the bearing and distance to the next waypoint.
* Using the track or course reading as a compass check.
* Using the map page and/or compass page to check drift.

Can anyone think of uses for a GPS unit peculiar to sea kayaking
(or marine travel in general) that I have overlooked?

How about the altitude readout on days when the waves get over 12 feet high
:-)

No. Ocean Paddler does not have a Web page. Great River Outfitters,
importer of Nigel Dennis Kayaks and Valley Canoe Products kayaks, is
the North American distributor of the magazine, so I assume it can be
found in most shops that carry those kayaks. I bought my copy at
Midwest Mountaineering in Minneapolis.

Actually, there is one at:

Not much of one, just an announcement of the launch of the new mag.

Have fun.
