Thanks Keith, for providing a source to check out both sides of the story. It is very illuminating indeed. The claim that the Makah make about their deteriorating health from not eating enough sea mammal meat is absurd. In fact, whale meat has an extremely high content of cholesterol. However is you compare whale meat with McDonald's... :-) There are several other things in the Makah pages that make no sense at all. On the other side, it seems that the anti-whaling propaganda about the Makah being financed by the Japanese and others, and about the plans to sell whale byproducts overseas, are also unfunded and absurd. While I do not support the killing of whales, I do not feel comfortable anymore being represented by an anti-whaling group that does not stick to objective facts and truth. I would be happy to go as far as running an endless whale watching kayak tour that would make the Makah wait forever before they can aproach a whale, but standing among other protesters who yell absurd lies would be embarrassing, to say the least. I strongly recommend that "In The Path of Giants" and "Project Sea Wolf" stick strictly to facts and the truth for the sake of their credibility. Again, my sincere appreciation to Keith Kaste for taking the time to find the sources of both parties. - Julio > > Representatives of the Makah tribe made the following web references > available to me: > > FAQ for Makah whale hunt: http://conbio.rice.edu/nae/docs/makahfaq.html > > Makah management plan: > http://conbio.rice.edu/nae/docs/makahplan.html > > seattle times articles: > http://www.seattletimes.com/news/local/html98/altwhal_072498.html > http://archives.seattletimes.com/cgi-bin/texis/web/vortex/display?storyID=50250&query=Makah > > action alert: > http://whales.magna.com.au/alert/makah/index.html > > Keith Kaste > > *************************************************************************** > PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List > Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net > Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net > Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ > *************************************************************************** > > *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************Received on Wed Aug 05 1998 - 18:15:01 PDT
