The 520 is visibly better built for water tightness than is the M3A (JS-4 rating). Of worthy mention however is, I would monitor the Wx from the M3A in the car. I can't do that with the Apelco 520. I conclude that the Icom had a more sensitive receiver, although I don't know what the specs say.
