[Paddlewise] Waterproof binocs, rangefinders, night vision goggles

I am not playing with you all: I am very serious about 
these great toys! 

Anyone used the Steiner Commander II? (waterproof, with
range and bearing reticle, operates in low-light conditions)

Also, can any of you chemists/physicists explain how
night vision goggles work? Why are the images bathed
in green? Oh, and what is with that icky little whiney
sound they emit?
