Last night I went to the grand opening of The Boat-House. Located in a former sculpture studio, this is a new business located at 937 West Seventh Street, St. Paul, MN 55102. The focus is small craft for paddle, oar, and sail. Quoting their brochure, "We offer all types all small boats and accessories.... We offer plans, kits, and materials for boat builders and restorers, and intend to be _the_ center in the Twin Cities for wooden boat builders." Among other things, they are a dealer for P&H sea kayaks, Chesapeake Light Craft, Interlux paints and varnishes, and MAS and WEST epoxy systems. They stock marine plywood and fiberglass for stitch-and-glue kayaks, and Dale Hedtke, the owner, says they also plan to stock materials for skin kayaks. Dale, who is a collector of books about arctic exploration, also sells new and used books about sea kayaks and other non-motorized boats, and Bob Boucher's video about how to make a Greenland kayak. The Boat-House will also offer classes in boat-building and restoration, and possibly one in making Greenland paddles. Unfortunately, USWest has told them they might not get around to installing telephone service in the store until early next year. Meanwhile, Dale and Amy are taking calls on their home answering machine at (651) 292-1448 and faxes at (651) 292-1366. Dale's e-mail address is hedtke_at_usinternet.com. He hopes to have a Web page soon.
