As a kayak surfer, I have a few times been dumped on shallow reefs. I believe when the water is very shallow and you need to make a very fast roll, you are better off laying back on the stern deck, pulling your elbows in close to your chest hands near your face and roll from this position. Your roll can be completed with very little clearance from the bottom and you are offering protection for your face. I have done this making full contact with the bottom and still have all my teeth.
