I built a rack similar to what you describe using 2X2 screen room aluminum 
that I scrounged when a friend rennovated his porch. I made cushions and 
saddles from boogie-boards discarded at the beach and indoor-outdoor carpet 
scraps. Works great. It's super strong and light - I carry a canvas and 
cedar canoe and a 15 ft Prism kayak at the same time. And the price was 
right.
