The other death happened several years ago. I have never seen a full
report, but as I recall, the kayaker was making a several-mile solo
crossing to an island. As I recall, he was paddling a heavily-laden
kayak (it might have been a Chinook) with gear strapped to the deck,
and was using a kite for propulsion. The body, when recovered, was
wearing a dry suit, but the drysuit was full of water, either because a
gasket failed or because it was unzipped.

If he capsized and made a wet exit while the kite was deployed, it is
easy to imagine that the kayak was quickly pulled away from him faster
than he could swim, especially if his dry suit was unzipped.

This is only one of several sea kayaking fatalities that has never been
investigated and reported by Sea Kayaker or featured in Deep Trouble.

<...a sea kayaking fatality on Lake Superior.
Does anyone have any information?>

Chuck:

I talked to Don Dimond last week. There was apparently a kayaking fatality
near Thunder Bay earlier this year. A paddler drowned while attempting to
cross from Chippewa Park to Pie Island, about a 7-mile crossing, in heavy
seas.

What was the second death on Lake Michigan (not the Polish paddler)? There
are two paddlers attempting to cross from Chicago to Benton Harbor this
weekend.
