The one I have has a 4" x 2" plastic base, which is mounted
through the hull, I used 4 big brass screws cut to length, sunk
through the hole, and screwed into brass nuts and disk washers.
The rod holder part slips into a whole in the top. I also use this
mount for a small outrigger, to make it easier to get back in my
closed cockpit boat after diving. Total additional cost of the
outrigger is about $6, half a thick pool noodle, a 4' 3/4" dowel, and
some webbing strap+clips; plus 30 minutes or so of hand sewing.

I've been trolling with a topwater lure that is popular in our area
called Mirrolures. Usually a mullet imitation, Usually a floater.
Most folks seem to like the handline idea, but a cheap, used
trolling reel can be had for under $10, and filled with 50# dacro
trolling line, its perfect fine, and more convenient. I marry it to a
broken off rod of about 2' in length. Gives me a good handle and
eyelet, strong line, and low cost.

Trolling just outside the surfzone looks like it could be extremely
productive, saw tons of baitfish yesterday, even got hit in the head
by one trying to dodge my paddle. Only problem being all the
stupid jellyfish....
