Chuck shows off as he writes below. How do you show off? Curious in Richmond, Calif. Doing those tricks is not just to show off, but to gain confidence. I do what Chuck does. Then I throw the paddle away as far as it goes, about 15 feet, swim to it while in the kayak, retrieve it, and roll up. Then I leave it floating in the water, capsize with nothing in my hands, retrieve the solid paddlefloat from the aft deck, and roll back up with it. Next, I go over again, retrieve the paddlefloat again from the aft deck, put it behind my neck, and take a nap with my face out of the water; then I repeat but using my paddle behind my neck instead of the paddlefloat. I only have another 20 other different types of rolls to learn for a full Greenland repertoire. I am currently working in my hands roll, and rolling with a throwing stick, aka norsaq. - Julio (thanks for asking :-) ) > Chuck shows off as he writes below. > How do you show off? > > Curious in Richmond, Calif. > > > At 09:01 AM 10/16/98 -0500, Chuck Holst wrote: > > > A couple of handy things about using a storm paddle as a spare is that > I can carry it on the foredeck, where it is easy to reach, and that it > requires no assembly. Play catch the motorboat, working your way up the wake to get near the boat. Which can be a great surprise to those in the boat. (stay away from the prop, don't do this in a crowded area, blah, blah blah) With a group of people, who hopefully can roll, how far over can you lean your boat without tipping over. Bracing is optional ;-) This is also a good drill for new paddlers using a paddlefloat. If you can roll many ways can you roll, both with a paddle and with available "props". Can someone you are with, teach you a new one? For "silly" rolls I like a sculling roll, start upside down and scull yourself back upright, with minimal hip snap. I also like using floating objects (boats, buoys, fellow paddlers) for practicing control. How fast and accurately can you paddle around an imaginary slalom course. My other practice "drill" is simply going to a local spot where I find the conditions challenging and trying to sit still, without bracing, as various waves go by. kirk *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************

It doesn't do much good for your sinuses though!
