It's also easy to break a paddle this way. Reminds me of someone showing me a trick with their paddle one time. We were out in a lake practicing rolls and boat handling maneuvers in deep water and the guy said, "Watch this!" He took his paddle, held it vertically in the water then threw it down into the water real hard. In about 15(?) seconds it shot back up out of the water vertically. Neato. One of the other guys tried it and same thing. Someone else tried it, and managed to throw it hard enough that it stuck in the bottom and didn't surface. They had to dive for it.
