Given discussions I had with many about the rollers, I had intended to mix
my cradles with my rollers when I got my new vehicle. My truck is pretty
high in the back, so the rollers are a must. When I put my new rack
system on, I found that my old cradles would not work with the wide bar
that I chose to buy for cuting down the wind noise and to maintain a more
'natural' appearance to my rooftop rack system.

Given that I couldn't use my cradles and I wanted (needed!!) to paddle
that day, I chose to use all four rollers. I've had my boat on top two
dozen times since and have been <very> happy with them!

I find that I do <not> get the play that others have mentioned. When the
boat is strapped down, it's nice and tight. I also find that the rollers
conform to the hull shape better than the cradles do -- I always had
problems getting just the right curve in the cradles, then I had to play
around a lot with positioning the boat in the cradle to find just the
right place for the best fit... every time I put the boat on top.

Another thing I like about the Hully Roller system is the fact that when
the boat comes down, so do the straps. They don't hang out on top of the
car and get damaged by sunlight and other weather conditions when they're
not in use. I guess that you can do this with the cradles, but the
cradles seem to work better with the straps thread through the cradle
mechanism.

In any case, I have two complete roof rack systems (towers, bars, cradles)
that I'm looking to sell to clear space in my garage. One set fits a
Toyota 4Runner, the other fits a Dodge Caravan (with rain gutters). If
you're local to D.C. and are interested in them make me an offer.
