The boater was Scott Bristow of Marietta Georgia. He was paddling a short (< 8') playboat, running Great Falls with 3 other boaters. At one point, he missed a line and ran the wrong way down a chute, backwards, ending up in a place called Charlie's Hole, a violent recirculating hydraulic. His boat, paddle, and PFD were recovered; he has not been as yet. Scott was a well-liked and capable boater. He will be greatly missed by many, many people. Steve Searchers Report No Signs of Missing Kayaker Associated Press Monday, November 30, 1998; Page B02 Searchers on land and in the air combed a section of the Potomac River for two hours yesterday at the request of the family of a lost kayaker. Once again, their search was futile. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Captain Jim Resnick said a wave known as a hydraulic pulled the 26-year-old man underwater Saturday after his craft overturned. The man, from Marietta, Ga., had been kayaking with four friends between Alger's Inn and Great Falls. Resnick said the rapids there are considered difficult and ranked Class 3 and 4 on a scale of one to five. -- Test Scoring & Reporting Services Sometimes, you never can University of Georgia always tell what you Athens, GA 30602-5593 least expect the most. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************Received on Mon Nov 30 1998 - 13:35:15 PST
