The last few times I capsized in surf I managed to roll up without rolling.
I didn't set up, didn't sweep, didn't hip snap. Yet I rolled up comfortably
broached on the wave in a high brace. I think that I just sort of stick my
paddle out and up I come.

I am afraid that if someone tells me what the heck I do, I won't be able to
do it anymore. But it would be nice to do it deliberately.

The wave is in constant circling motion and you probably just got you
paddle on the back side of the wave which is going upward and lifted you up.

Done deliberately in the face of a wave this is a surfing maneuver known as
"window shading." As the wave approaches the shore it draws the water out from
the beach and up it's face. If you were to capsize down wave with your paddle
out, then roll around so the paddle ends up in the wave face the water moving
up the face can lift your paddle, and you hanging on to it, up to where you
find yourself again sitting upright in your boat with your paddle extended
into the wave face in a bracing position. I think the first time everyone
experiences this it is completely by accident.

These are called *barrel rolls* or if done continuously *windowshading*. They
are quite automatic as your paddle and body position is all *set* for the
recovery. They are a blast to practice in the surf, providing the water is
*deep* enough. It happens unintentionally in a river hole if you flip in the
correct position.

I just did the same roll yesterday. When I came up my kayaks bow was sitting
in the lap of another Kayaker as we broached on the wave face. Neither of us
were to happy about it, but both OK.
Completing that surf roll is mostly not doing anything to screw it up. Stay in
the boat and let the wave do its thing.
