Yesterday at about 3:30 went out with my mate John Dixon on his Tsunami sit-on-top kevlar double launching from Moss Beach and into a relatively flat Pacific Ocean. We're just south of San Francisco and just north of the now famous Mavericks break and have been seeing some big ol' swell lately. Playing around some rocks we took a dunking that let me test my new custom wetsuit from Heatwave in Santa Cruz. A good fit sure makes a difference. I didn't even feel the water and it was probably about 52 degrees. John was wearing his drysuit. We hopped back on and paddled north to Montera (not very far) after going through a little rocky chute a couple of times. I was enjoying the yellow afternoon light on the seaside houses and the historic Montera lighthouse, the waves on rocks and the brisk pristine air. As we turned around and headed home to Moss Beach and the Fitzpatrick Marine Reserve a helicopter seemed to be buzzing us and came back over us another two times. I said to John, "Must be some bored Maverick's photographers." But just as I said that I saw a whale spout about a quarter of a mile away. We were upstaged. Probably greys on their way back to Baja. While we wheeled the boat back to the house (1/2 block) I realized the only parts of me that were cold on this day that hovered in the 50's were my feet and my neck. Time to get well-fitting booties without zippers, and a neoprene hood. Then, plunk, the sun set at 4:55, just like it was 'spozed to. Happy winter paddling, Barbara in Northern California. * -- * -- * -- * -- * -- * -- * -- * --*--*--*-- Sea Kayak Italia - Elba, Italy http://www.seakayakitaly.com tel. 650-728-8720 fax 650-728-8753 * -- * -- * -- * -- * -- * -- * -- * -- *--* --*-- *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************
