Is there any way to avoid the $50 excess baggage charge for the longeron
& oar bag? For a Folboat Kodiak or GII, that bag is 58x10x10, summing
to 78. The int'l limit for this sum is 65, domestic is 62. Are there
any exceptions thst someone has discovered? Subterfuge? Big tip to the
baggage man?

I've traveled by air with a tandem Klepper 6 or 7 times, and never been
charged excess baggage. I think the key is to keep the total number of bags
to 2 per person.

On flights originating or ending in the U.S., the official limit is 2 bags per
person, with maximum weight being about 75 pounds per bag. This rule applies
even to connecting flights, such as Delhi-London, as long as you are
connecting immediately, say, London-Boston.

I've always had two people traveling together, and never more than 4 checked
bags. As long as we met this rule, I have found that most U.S. airline
personnel are not oriented to measuring and weighing.

I pack 2-piece paddles in the same bag with long frame parts, and use a large
duffle to carry some camping gear along with the hull and other boat parts. I
am pretty sure my long bag exceeded 65 inches, but never had anyone measure
it. It's probably best to check bags at the curb, where possible. I usually
tip skycaps pretty well, in any case, and this can't hurt.

It is worth noting that for any other flight, on almost every airline
worldwide, the baggage allowance is 20 KG per person, irrespective of the
number of bags. This gives you about 86 pounds when two people travel
together. Excess baggage charges are often figured at 1% of 1st-class fare
per kilo beyond 20. This can get quite expensive.
