Read Brother John's post & Ralph's response. The 'D' ring thing is what
I use on my Santana VHF from West Marine (the radio is a Uniden
knock-off). Keeps the thing close and operable as I have yet to see it
become dysfunctional having been soaked in salt and fresh water. Bought
a waterproof bag but it's hard to channel tune the beasty after the
initial call cause my old eyes can't always see the wee little LCD
screen!

The 'goin' south' thing however sounds awfully good right now with all
the ice on Lake Michigan - Hey, John! Meet you at Milwaukee's Mitchell
Field in about 30 minutes! Ralph, ya got a couple of boats for two
frozen souls? Well come south just to the point at which we bring out
the dry suits and someone says, "What's that thing!".

The "goin'south" thing is a happening! After being frozen out of our weekly
Sunday paddle for the last three weeks (haven't had the boat in the water
since New Year's Day)--first the blizzard stopped us, then came the ice.
Putting-in is still a possibility via the ole seal launch off the ice shelf
routine. But taking-out would be very difficult. Hopefully the "thaw" this
week will reduce the hazard to an acceptable level and we'll be able to paddle
again soon.

In the mean time, there's a half dozen of us who are going down to the 1999
Gulf Coast Sea Kayak Symposium at the end of February at Fort Desoto Park in
St. Petersburg Florida. Won't even need to pack my drysuit! And won't need
to worry about the VHF radios not working because they're below the operating
temperature. Lots of BCU courses are being offered the week before too.
We're driving down so we won't need to borrow boats Ralph, but thanks!
