HI all
I've got a boat with valley canoe products hatches on a skerray. Generally
these seal very well. However i get leaks to varying degrees at various
times, and more so than other skerray owners I have encountered. My
bulheads seal, and I don't think I'm getting leaks from the hatch coamings.
When left in the sun the hatches bulge, indicating that they are sealing
(although the air flow could be very slow). Yet I often get water, although
sometimes my boat stays dry. I'm not too worried by this - i'm in no danger
of filling my boat, but I'm wondering if when the boat cools, once it hits
the water, water is drawn in through the hatches. It has occurred to me too
that an application of some sort of grease, perhaps akin to the silicon
product used to seal o-rings might help if applied to the coamings. Any
ideas?

Does anyone know if VCP is on the web?

Similar problem in my VCP Pintail. If you've got a skeg, check the box as a
first try. The pressurized hatch idea, mentioned in another response, is
definitely the best way to go, but, in the absence of those widgets, put the
boat up on hatches, put some (not a lot!) of water in the after compartment,
(maybe leave it in the sun, if you have it) and rotate the boat watching for
leaks at various angles. It's slower than the pressure method, but it works.

I do know that Great River Outfitters carries primarily
VCP (Valley Canoe Products) and Nigel Dennis Kayaks (NDK).

The GRO web site is at ...
http://www.erols.com/rapids/GRO/

In fact GRO happens to be the sole U.S. importer and distributor
for VCP and NDK products.

Small Boat Shop in Norwalk, CT, is now selling NDK Romanys. Not sure about
any other boats & products in the line, though.

Not sure this was the way the thread started, but Dana (pronounced "Donna")
Chladek, daughter of Stan and Emma Chladek, retails a full line of VCP boats
at her Rapidstyle facility in Kensington, Maryland, just north of the
Washington, DC Beltway.

I found a couple of pinhole leaks in Linda's kayak this way, in both the
keel and the skeg box. If you have a white hull, it helps to put food dye
in the water.

My guess is that its not from the hatches but maybe from the seams. If the
hatches bulge or dimple in then it's a good sign that things are tight. I
try to pop the hatch cover once the boat is in the water to equalize.
