So use good old Ma Bell and call. The Web ain't all what it is cracked up to be and while it is handy to shop on the Web, phone is infinitely better. ralph diaz -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ralph Diaz . . . I recently bought an Apelco 520 radio from CME (www.cmelectron.com). Just after I did, I saw a post from someone who got a little better price on the same unit from someone else (can't remember who), but CME was better than all the others I had found and it arrived quickly. rdiaz_at_ix.netcom.com wrote: > > K. That was me, Rob. I had found mine at Defender by a chance call but CME was the best listed price. I also mentioned their web site here yesterday as a good cheap source but you may not have noticed it because I did not give its name Consumer Marine Electronics, CME. An aside, I called Apelco for an accessory (the Universal Quick Charger) since I wanted to make certain to get the right one for my radio. The quoted price there was one I had seen in some other sources such as West Marine. I started to place the order but then told the Apelco person I would look around for a cheaper source. The order taker immediately responded that Raytheon (Apelco is one of their brands) had an authorized discounter! She gave me the phone number in New Jersey (not CME) and indeed it was the cheapest price I saw for the rapid charger. I ordered it and got it the next day. In the end, I returned it because, the Universal Quick Charger's rapid discharge feature does not work with the Apelco 520 whose electrical charge contacts are embedded in plastic to prevent corrosion (boy, that is real waterproofing) unlike other radios. I really wanted that for improving the battery's life. Also, for some reason, the one I got wasn't working well even as a charger but I think that is _not_ the fault of the discounter (it is absolutely the right one...the right sleeve). The discounter took it back without hesitation. If my account is credited promptly etc. I will put the discounter's phone number on this listserver as it would be a good source for lower prices. I guess I should also report it here if I get screwed or hassled with the return :-) . ralph -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ralph Diaz . . . All the rest of the big "boats'r'us" chains --- like West Marine and Boater's World which are major players at least on the east coast of the U.S. --- have sites, too. Also try Defender at http://www.defenderus.com But don't forget my advice about on-line prices not being as up to date as those you get on the phone. So use good old Ma Bell and call. The -------------- Also, don't be put off by what you may see on their site. I haven't been there for a while but they didn't have most of their stuff online the last time I checked. Good place to get their number to call for a catalog. Their catalog isn't very pretty but they do have the best prices. I browse the http://www.boatus.com/ and http://www.westmarine.com/ catalogs which are much prettier and informative but usually go back to Defender to make the purchase. I buy just enough from the other two to make myself feel a little less guilty for using their catalogs. :-) *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************

If you're strapped for time, you can e-mail them for info on things not on the site. Did so mid-morning today and had a response back within a half hour! Exact same rig: It said Apelco 520, but obviously the 520 didn't fit properly. I am comfortable that I WILL get the refund. Ralph wrote: >Isn't that a bitch!!!
