I would say that the Nikonos is neither an SLR or a point and shoot. 
It is really a rangefinder where one focuses by approximating the
range.  I would define a true point and shoot as a cheaper, autofocus
camera.  Rangefinders are often sharper, but you need to practice to get
good at using them.
