Tom, I'm jealous. They listed my time (7 hours 18 minutes --- I injured my elbow at the end of the first day, so my second day time was pretty bad), but I didn't get my picture on the web site. I'm going to watch for the camera this year and see if i can get in the picture! I have a big ego and would love to have my picture on the San Juan Challenge web site. I must admit, i was one of those racers with an amazed look on their faces when you showed up in a dry suit. I wore a light wet suit vest for the race and practically cooked as it was! I would have died in a dry suit. I'm a bit confused by your comments about them changing the race to make it a boring, flat water event. The San Juan's are generally flat compared to the open ocean. It wasn't a deliberate move by the organizers, its just the nature of the area. And while the water may be flat, the currents should be real strong (Its a new moon that weekend), so managing the currents will be an important part of one's race strategy. I also didn't find the jet skis to be annoying at all. They stayed out of the way for the most part. We get a wide range of paddler-skills on that race and i believe many of the participants were comforted by knowing a jet ski cold quickly get to them at any point on the course should they get into trouble. I think the San Juan Challenge is a great race and I am really looking forward to it. On the other hand, a tsunami ranger race in Half Moon bay sounds inticing as well. I haven't heard anything about that race. Do you have URL you could point us to? I would love a REAL rough water race with rock gardens, surf, high winds, and big swells. I just don't know where any such races are being held. --Tim *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************Received on Fri Feb 19 1999 - 12:45:42 PST
