IIRC, you can also password protect this news group. Subscribing to paddlewise would then get you the password. From there you go to deja news and read threads in the paddlewise news group at your leisure. I'm not sure if you would be able to conduct regular deja news searchs on this custom group though, but I bet you can. The upside: Automatic archives that are searchable. Your email account won't be flooded if you take a week long trip paddling into the sunset and hunting for CBRs. You don't have to unsubscribe if you become a heretic and stop paddling, just stop going to the news group. If you get a deja news email account you get an email account safeguarded against spam (it ain't perfect but they weed out most of it). The downside: Deja news can occasionaly be out of service and/or slow. Putting up with banner ads at the tops of all of the pages. Web access required (some people only have email). Not sure if it can be regulated by Mistress Jackie (need to check that). It would sort of be a custom rec.boats.paddle. Not saying I'm absolutely for this. It's just a thought. Avoiding repetitive threads has it's upsides and downsides. Maybe someone new is on the list with different insite than was posted before. Or maybe someone strongly on one side has reversed their position (like that will ever happen :) ). Point in case: A long time ago it was decided that a down sleeping bag was OK since with a little care you could keep it dry. When that thread came up again the majority voted against down this time. If someone just did a search insteading of spawning the latest thread they would have had an entirely different consensus than what came out when done again. Well, I've rambled long enough.
